The Benefits of McKenzie Method

The Benefits of McKenzie Method

Have you ever experienced back pain while sitting for long periods of time? Have you noticed that this back pain feels better after you spend some time walking around? Or that neck pain you experience feels worse when looking down and better when you look up? The McKenzie Method of Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), takes these patterns of pain and uses them to your advantage.

What is the McKenzie Method?

The McKenzie Method was developed by physiotherapist Robin McKenzie and is one of the most reliable and valid assessment/treatment methods for back, neck and extremity pain.

The McKenzie Method is not a tool that a clinician puts in their bag, it’s a bag that carries the tools. Exercise, stretching, strengthening, mobilization, manipulation, injections, and even decompressive surgeries, those are all tools. The MDT assessment is a reliable filter that allows the trained clinician to determine which of these tools is the best to use for each patient.

What makes this system so unique?

The McKenzie Method offers patient dual benefits by helping them to recover from a recent pain episode more rapidly and provides them with a means of prevention. If necessary, it also provides a strategy to manage future pain occurrences.

Who does McKenzie benefit?

The McKenzie method works wonders for a variety of musculoskeletal pain. Specifically, it is most effective for sciatica, disc herniations/bulges, pinched nerves, acute/chronic neck pain and numbness/tingling into the arms or legs.

Thus, the McKenzie Method empowers patients to be responsible for their own care, rather than the common situation of relying on passive management strategies.

Our chiropractor, Dr. Isaac Norman has recently passed his certification exam in the McKenzie Method and is one of only a few chiropractors in Toronto to have this certification.
