Spinal Decompression Service: What Is It and How Can It Help You?

Spinal Decompression Service: What Is It and How Can It Help You?

Last 9 months have been difficult for all of us as we have been essentially locked up in our homes. This doesn’t just impact our social, financial, and emotional wellbeing, but physical as well. Our physical activities are now limited to sitting 90% of the time, which creates an enormous impact on structures of our spine, resulting in forward flexion deformation, disbalance and postural changes. Subsequently, many of us are suffering from new episodes of neck, back, shoulder and hip pain. These conditions are frequently associated with numbness and tingling into arms and legs, may result in future chronicity and lead to disc problems and arthritis. How do we prevent progressive spinal changes and reduce painful episodes? Spinal decompression combined with repeated spinal loading into extension (McKenzie Protocol) reverses processes and disbalances that result from continuous forward flexion stresses and restores proper curvatures of the spine.

Back pain can cause serious disruptions across your life, affecting everything from your ability to work to performing household chores. But effective treatment can help you manage your pain and restore mobility to a more functional level.

Spinal decompression is a powerful solution capable of treating a range of conditions. It could relieve your discomfort and help you enjoy more mobility, whether your problems relate to a sports injury or another cause that’s harder to identify.

But how does spinal decompression work?

In this post, we’ll explore what spinal decompression service involves, how it can help, and what to expect during sessions.

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy targets spinal tissues such as spinal joints, muscles, and ligaments through controlled stretching.

Practitioners apply intermittent low-force traction and decompression to release pressure off the spinal discs. The aim is to treat and prevent disc-related disorders that can cause pain throughout the body, such as in the arms or legs. These can interfere with your everyday life in numerous ways, such as preventing you from exercising or sleeping comfortably.

Spinal decompression helps to encourage faster healing of problem discs and nerve root compression to target muscle spasms, enhance joint mobility, and reduce pain and/or numbness.

What Conditions Can Spinal Decompression Treat?

Spinal decompression treats multiple disorders and issues:

  • Acute disc injuries (bulging or herniated discs)
  • Degenerative disc problems
  • Osteoarthritis of the spine and hips
  • Spinal pain and muscle spasm
  • Reduced mobility and flexibility
  • Sciatica
  • Numbness and tingling in the arms or legs
  • Facet syndrome

You may be unable to pinpoint a possible cause or remember when you first noticed symptoms, but a consultation enables our practitioners to explore your condition in detail before starting treatment.

Practitioners will take the time to understand your symptoms, your lifestyle, and the factors that have led to your spinal issues. This helps you learn more about your spinal problems and the benefits of treatment.

What Does Treatment Involve?

Patients lie fully clothed on a table during treatment. You will be asked to position yourself face up or face down depending on the treatment requirements. The table is designed for comfort and stability.

Your practitioner will place two harnesses on you: one around your trunk, another around your pelvis. These will stretch your spine with slow, gentle movements: this releases pressure, and creates more comfortable and effective alignment.

Applying controlled, intermittent directional stretching and traction helps to restore function of the spine and promote healthy joint fluid exchange.

What Should I Expect with Spinal Decompression Services?

Bloor Yonge Chiropractic follows a carefully structured treatment process to ensure a quality patient experience. We’re committed to providing you with tailored treatment, and help you find relief from problems related to the spine.

Initial Treatment

Your treatment will begin with an initial examination with Dr. Igor Sapozhnikov, D.C. or Dr. Isaac Norman, D.C.

Dr. Sapozhnikov is our clinic director and has helped many patients with an extensive range of disorders. As a former professional athlete with the Canadian National Water Polo team, he has invaluable knowledge of how various injuries can affect the musculoskeletal system.

Dr. Norman also comes from a sporting background: he was a former member of the Canadian Youth Surf Team, which led him to develop a passion for health care and patient rehabilitation.

Both doctors have extensive experience of helping patients with spinal decompression in Toronto.

This initial examination with Dr. Sapozhnikov or Dr. Norman is the foundation upon which your treatment will be built. They will ask about any injuries or issues that could contribute to your discomfort, such as sporting accidents or mobility difficulties. They will also discuss your general health background to identify other potential contributing factors.

Your doctor will perform three types of examinations during this meeting:

  • Orthopedic
  • Neurological
  • Functional

Each allows your doctor to establish the right diagnosis and start building your bespoke treatment plan.

Treatment Plan

The Bloor Yonge Chiropractic team has created unique therapy protocols to enhance each patient’s functional levels and overall quality of life through dedicated treatment.

We’ll prescribe a tailored spinal decompression protocol based on the doctor’s diagnosis, and the type and stage of your injury. We may also combine this with additional treatments to achieve the best results for your recovery, such as physiotherapy, manipulation, and specially selected exercises.

Maintenance

You may visit our clinic to address and resolve one or more conditions through decompression, but we’ll take your treatment beyond this.

We’ll conduct a comprehensive assessment of your general health and identify opportunities for you to make lifestyle changes for your benefit. These may involve:
