Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression therapy is used in the treatment and prevention of disc-related disorders that cause arm and leg pain, numbness, sciatica, and scoliosis.

Our Approach

Although usually seen as a “disc” related treatment, this therapy targets spinal tissues such as muscles, ligaments, and spinal joints. It helps to speed up the healing of disc problems and nerve root compression, reduce muscle spasm, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain and numbness.

Spinal Decompression therapy involves intermittent low force traction and decompression applied to the spine to release pressure. With the use of a traction table, we apply controlled intermittent directional stretching and traction of the spine to restore its function and promote joint fluid exchange.

Conditions Treated

Results vary from patient to patient; however, studies show that Spinal Decompression therapy is effective in treating and preventing a wide range of neck and back disorders. This therapy is used to treat:
  • Acute disc injuries (bulging or herniated discs)
  • Degenerative disc problems
  • Osteoarthritis of the spine and hips
  • Spinal pain and muscle spasm
  • Reduced mobility and flexibility
  • Sciatica
  • Numbness and tingling in the arms or legs
  • Facet syndrome

Our Process

Initial Examination

During the first visit our Clinic Director Dr. Igor Sapozhnikov, D.C. will perform an initial examination where patients will disclose any particular issue or injury, as well as their health history. Dr. Sapozhnikov will also perform orthopedic, neurological and functional examinations to establish the correct diagnosis.

Treatment Plan

We have developed unique Spinal Decompression therapy protocols to effectively improve patient’s functional levels and quality of life. Depending on the diagnosis and the stage of injury, Dr. Sapozhnikov will prescribe individually designed decompression protocol combined, if necessary, with physical therapy, manipulation and exercises.

Maintenance

Although many of our patients come to Bloor Yonge Chiropractic to address specific conditions, our team will also assess your overall health and recommend any lifestyle changes. Our treatment plans may emphasize dietary changes, exercise and weight maintenance programs and nutritional supplements, in addition to a spinal decompression or other treatments.
